Hello, it’s Mila!
I still remember the first pattern I ever bought. I was so excited that I sat down with my yarn the very same evening. And I got stuck almost straight away. The instructions were written in abbreviations, with no photos and not a single diagram. Halfway through I had no idea whether I was doing it right or whether I should pull it all out and start over. I pulled it all out.
That was the moment I promised myself that if I ever started writing patterns of my own, they would look completely different. They would take you by the hand, not leave you guessing. And that is exactly why today I want to show you what you get when you buy my pattern.
One question lands in my inbox more than any other: “Mila, what do I actually get when I buy a pattern?” It is a fair thing to ask, because you are buying something you cannot flip through before you pay for it. I have used my newest design, Rosy Crop Top, as the example here, but you get the very same thing with every pattern in my shop. The images below are blurred on purpose. I do not want to give away the instructions themselves, because that is the heart of the pattern. What I do want is for you to see exactly how the file looks.
A real PDF, not a single sheet of abbreviations
When you crochet from a new pattern, the worst thing you can meet is a wall of abbreviations with no context. That is why every pattern of mine is a carefully made PDF, where everything has its place and its order. For Rosy, that is 35 pages with photographs, tables, and schematics. I want you to feel, as you read it, that I am sitting next to you and explaining each step.
Introduction and materials list
Before you make your first stitch, I want you to know exactly what you will need. Nothing spoils the joy of a project like discovering halfway through that you have run out of yarn or that you have the wrong hook. So every pattern opens with a clear list of materials. For Rosy that means a 3.5 mm hook and YarnArt Jeans or Drops Safran yarn. You know what to buy and how much before you even begin.
The “measure-yourself” system and size table
This is the part you tend to love most, and I understand why. Fixed S, M, L sizes really only fit a handful of people. The rest of us have to improvise, shorten, add stitches, and hope it works out. With my patterns it is different. You get a table and clear guidance that let you fit the piece to your figure and your preferred length. You measure yourself, and you make something that sits exactly the way you want. My testers most often tell me this is the first time they have made a top that genuinely fits them.
Step-by-step instructions with photos
Text alone can be confusing, especially at the trickier moments. That is why every important stage is photographed. You are never left with a dry description on its own. You look at the photo and compare it with your own work. With Rosy this helps most around the neckline and straps, which is exactly where it is easiest to lose your way.
Schematics and dimensions
I like to know where I am heading, and I think you do too. So every pattern includes technical drawings with measurements. With them you can see at any moment what each part should look like and how it all comes together into a finished piece. It is a little like a map you can always check to see where you are.
Yarn-usage table
This one little table saves a lot of nerves. It is my favourite touch for peace of mind. It shows the approximate yarn usage, so you buy the right number of skeins. No more chasing a missing ball from a different dye lot, and no more cupboard full of leftovers.
Why I make my patterns this way
For me, a pattern is not only a set of instructions. It is the feeling that you can do this. Most people do not give up on crochet because they lack the ability. They give up because they got stuck once, felt lost, and lost heart. I want my patterns to work the opposite way. I want you to finish a project and immediately feel like starting the next one. That is why I put so much care into the photos, the schematics, and into making every sentence clear. I would rather spend a few extra days refining a pattern than leave you guessing.
